Super Bowl LVII: Preview & Picks

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! Football’s biggest day has come, and the stories could not be better.

Preview

For the Chiefs, it’s their first Super Bowl appearance since Super Bowl LV, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kansas City last won a Super Bowl in 2019 at Super Bowl LIV, defeating the San Francisco 49ers. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and defensive tackle Chris Jones headline the players on the current team that played in Super Bowl LIV.

The Eagles will be making their first Super Bowl appearance since winning the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LII, defeating the New England Patriots. Philadelphia doesn’t have as many players with Super Bowl experience. Key players from 2017’s championship team still with the team include center Jason Kelce, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, and offensive tackle Lane Johnson.

The story mentioned the most has to be the fact that this is the first time that two brothers are playing against each other in the Super Bowl. Travis and Jason Kelce are both Super Bowl champions and both are on pace to Canton no matter the outcome of this game. Travis Kelce is one of the greatest tight ends of all time, while Jason Kelce is one of the best centers in the league.

It’s also the first time two black quarterbacks will face off, with Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, both All-Pro quarterbacks this season.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid won his first Super Bowl as head coach in 2019 at Super Bowl LIV, but winning this Super Bowl might mean more to him. Reid was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 to 2012, leading them to a Super Bowl appearance in 2004. Winning tonight would make him a three-time Super Bowl, as his first came as an assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers during Super Bowl XXXI.

The Chiefs weren’t the favorites to win the AFC after losing superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins in a blockbuster trade. Kansas City added insurance at wide receiver with JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

A key player in Kansas City’s offense to watch out for is the running back pairing of rookie Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon, who have combined for 1633 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. The offensive line also was key for the top offense in the NFL. Mahomes was named MVP after setting a record for most total yards in a season by a quarterback with 5608 yards.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni led the team to an 8-0 start and finished his second season with an NFL-best 14-3 record.

The Eagles added wide receiver A.J. Brown in a blockbuster trade during the 2022 NFL Draft, who has been the best receiver for the Eagles in a long time. This has been the best season in Brown’s young career.

The path for the Eagles was drastically easier compared to the Chiefs’ path. The Eagles handled the Giants to advance to the NFC Championship. With the help of the 49ers suffering game-changing injuries, the Eagles steamrolled their way to Glendale.

The Chiefs had a tougher path, defeating the Jaguars and Bengals in one-possession games. The AFC Championship was very controversial with many calls that led to social media thinking the NFL is rigged.

Prediction

I’m excited about this Super Bowl matchup as I think it will be full of fireworks between the two best offenses in their respective conferences.

The game will be decided when the Chiefs have the ball. Can the Chiefs’ offensive line, one of the best in the NFL, hold up against the Eagles pass rush? Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, and Javon Hargrave gives Philadelphia four players who recorded at least ten sacks, an NFL record.

I think this game will be back-and-forth and not as high-scoring as people imagine. It could go down to who has the ball last.

I think the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl, with Haason Reddick winning MVP. That will be thanks to their defense, which was very aggressive in the NFC Championship.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
