2023 U.S. Open: Scheffler, Rahm headline loaded field in Los Angeles

Two majors down, two more to go as the North Course of the Los Angeles Country Club will be home to this year’s U.S. Open.

There are 25 major champions in the field, including Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka, who have won the year’s first two majors.

In last year’s U.S. Open in Brookline, Massachusetts, Matt Fitzpatrick hit an iconic bunker shot on the 72nd hole of his tournament onto the green, which eventually gave him a one-stroke win over Will Zalatoris, who barely missed a putt to force a playoff. Fitzpatrick will return to defend, but Zalatoris is out for the season, recovering from an injury.

The course layout looks to be possibly the most difficult on the PGA Tour this season. There are two par 3 holes that are over 280 yards long, six par 4s at least 480 yards long, and two par 5s at least 590 yards long. The USGA posted on social media the roughs on the course, where the ball just disappears, making for very difficult shots if a player misses the fairway or green.

According to bet365, 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win his second major, with two-time major champion Jon Rahm behind him. A player without any major victories that could win the tournament is Viktor Hovland, who now has the sixth-best odds to win the tournament thanks to a win at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday.

My prediction was hard. I do see Viktor Hovland winning a major this year, whether it be in Los Angeles or at The Open Championship in July. However, I have Hovland beating Max Homa and Jon Rahm on Sunday. Hovland is due for a major championship, Rahm will be on the leaderboard the entire week, and Homa played this course back in 2013 at the Pac-12 Championships, where he shot 61, a course record.
