My College Basketball Top 25 – 2/1/21

Many upsets have occurred from last Monday to today. Penn State knocked off Wisconsin, Oklahoma upset Texas and Alabama, Auburn defeated Missouri. Here’s how those and many other games affect my top 25 rankings:

  1. Gonzaga (17-0) What needs to happen so that Baylor takes over at #1? Gonzaga losing, which doesn’t seem to be happening for a while.
  2. Baylor (16-0) Baylor defeated Sharife Cooper and the Auburn Tigers this past weekend, the same team that upset Missouri earlier last week.
  3. Villanova (11-1) The Wildcats are still at the top of the Big East and it isn’t close. However, the Big East isn’t as strong as past years have shown. Their next opponent is St. John’s, who has a four-game win streak, including an upset win over UConn.
  4. Michigan (13-1) The Wolverines are on pause, but start up again on Wednesday against Northwestern.
  5. Houston (15-1) Houston deserves to be in a better league than the American Athletic Conference. No one in that conference comes close to Houston.
  6. Oklahoma (11-4) The Sooners look good as they got two top 10 wins over Texas and Alabama. Austin Reaves could be scary to go up against come the postseason.
  7. Texas (11-3) The Longhorns got upset on Tuesday by Oklahoma, ranked 24th at the time.
  8. Iowa (12-4) With back-to-back losses to Indiana and Illinois, the Hawkeyes need to step it up.
  9. Ohio State (14-4) The Buckeyes are on a three-game winning streak, with wins over Wisconsin, Michigan State, and a Penn State team that just upset Wisconsin.
  10. Alabama (14-4) Surprisingly, the Crimson Tide are still undefeated in the SEC. However, they did experience a loss in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge to Oklahoma, who may be Andy Katz’s team of the week.
  11. Illinois (11-5) Illinois upset Iowa and defeated Penn State. I know this is a huge jump but so much happened this week that Illinois ended up 11th.
  12. Texas Tech (12-5) Snapped a two-game losing streak (lost to Baylor and West Virginia) with a win over LSU.
  13. Creighton (13-4) The Bluejays are on a 3-game winning streak, but they only won by single digits to DePaul.
  14. Tennessee (12-3) Yes, they’re overrated. However, they beat another overrated team: Kansas. Do not buy into this Tennessee team.
  15. Virginia (11-3) The Cavaliers lost to rival Virginia Tech after starting 7-0 in the ACC.
  16. Virginia Tech (13-3) The Hokies pull off a top 10 upset win over their rival, which is enough to bring them back into the rankings.
  17. Florida State (10-3) Florida State goes up one spot regardless that they just lost to Georgia Tech.
  18. Missouri (11-3) Missouri experienced an upset loss to Auburn on Tuesday and then beat TCU in overtime on Saturday. Xavier Pinson might be my vote for SEC Player of the Year.
  19. West Virginia (11-5) West Virginia may have lost to Florida, but a win over Texas Tech on Monday keeps them in the top 20.
  20. Florida (10-4) Florida is on a four-game winning streak with wins over Tennessee and more recently, West Virginia.
  21. UCLA (13-3) I wish the Bruins played more games, but getting a win over Oregon State solidified them staying in the top 25.
  22. Purdue (12-6) Purdue has won five out of the last six games, with wins over good Big Ten programs such as Ohio State and Michigan State. This week, they upset Minnesota in West Lafayette.
  23. Oklahoma State (11-4) The Cowboys picked up a solid win in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, defeating Arkansas. However, I don’t think that’s very impressive.
  24. Loyola Chicago (14-3) They are on a seven-game win streak and they look to be on pace to get 20 wins before the end of the regular season.
  25. USC (13-3) Many teams fell out so that USC could come back in. But, their next few games get harder, so they have to prove to me that they deserve to be ranked.

EDIT: Completely forgot about Wisconsin. I won’t adjust the rankings, because I will own up to my mistake. I would’ve put them at 23, move down OSU and Loyola Chicago and kick out USC.
