The UConn Huskies could be ranked in the AP Top 25 this week for the first time since the preseason poll during the 2016-17 season.
A lot has happened from last Monday to yesterday. We’ve seen upsets, one-possession games, and blowouts. Here’s my top 25 for this week:
- Gonzaga (12-0) Who else? Even though many advanced ranking sites are ranking Baylor number 1, I don’t think Baylor would be number 1 unless Gonzaga loses a game or Baylor goes undefeated in Big 12 play.
- Baylor (11-0) Baylor begins Big 12 play on the right note. I wish Gonzaga and Baylor played each other like scheduled.
- Texas (10-1) Villanova is on pause and Texas beat West Virginia on the road by 2.
- Villanova (8-1) I need Villanova to figure out how to keep the team COVID-19 free. They’ve barely made a dent into Big East play.
- Iowa (11-2) Iowa defeated a talented Minnesota team yesterday by 15. The Big Ten is STACKED.
- Kansas (10-2) Kansas won a close one against Oklahoma. Surprised they don’t have a high scoring player.
- Creighton (10-2) Creighton can shoot the heck out of the ball. Makes up for earlier this season.
- Michigan (10-0) Their game against Penn State ended up being postponed, but they beat Minnesota so they move up. It’s tough to be undefeated in the Big Ten.
- Tennessee (9-1) Tennessee added two games against Arkansas and Texas A&M to the win column.
- Houston (10-1) Houston won by 7 against Wichita State, then blew out Tulane. Other teams experienced losses.
- Wisconsin (10-2) The Badgers escaped a 2 overtime game against Indiana. Too bad they didn’t play anyone else since the last rankings came out.
- Texas Tech (10-3) Texas Tech picks up wins against Kansas State and Iowa State.
- Oregon (9-2) Oregon lost to a good Colorado team but then wins against Utah. They move up because better teams lost worse.
- Illinois (9-4) Illinois destroyed Northwestern but loses a close one to Maryland.
- West Virginia (9-4) The Mountaineers lost a one-possession game against Texas, who I ranked top 3. Oscar Tshiebwe transferred to Kentucky.
- Clemson (9-1) The Tigers continue their win streak but were challenged against NC State, who took them to overtime.
- Louisville (8-1) Louisville got a good win over Virginia Tech. I didn’t rank them last week but they proved themselves this week.
- Alabama (9-3) The Crimson Tide are undefeated in the SEC. How were they not ranked in last week’s AP Poll?
- UConn (6-1) The Huskies more ways to score other than James Bouknight. Tyler Polley can’t miss. Name him Big East Player of the Week. I was on edge about ranking them, especially this high, but the way their offense has been playing, they deserve it. UConn is back. Also, rest in peace to the man who deserves a lot of credit for where UConn is today, Dee Rowe.
- Colorado (8-3) Colorado beats the best Pac-12 team and advanced rankings have seemed to rank them high.
- Ohio State (9-3) The Buckeyes upset Rutgers, who has been struggling lately. A lot happens when the Big Ten starts conference play.
- Missouri (7-2) I’ll rank them only because they played one game, but you cant lose that badly to Mississippi State, a below-average team.
- Virginia (7-2) The ACC is particularly weak this year compared to other years. Where’s Duke? Where’s North Carolina? Unranked that’s where they are.
- USC (8-2) The Trojans are on a 3 game win streak, all against good teams in the Pac-12. Okay I lied, I forgot Arizona State lost to UTEP. Dang, they were a disappointing team this year.
- Florida State (5-2) They have to play a game soon or they won’t be on here next week. I was so close to putting Maryland on here, but what made me not rank the Terrapins was that they were just on a losing streak.
